Downend School became a Specialist School in 1999 and has been successfully re-designated in 2002 and again in autumn 2007. Specialist status benefits the whole School – the curriculum and the facilities. The School is affiliated to the Specialist Schools Trust and aims to provide every student with their own special pathway to success. As a School with the Technology specialism we use our specialist status to raise standards of achievement and quality of learning in Design and Technology, Science, Mathematics and Information and Communication Technology for all students across the ability range. Specialist status has enabled us to spread new ideas, develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning, develop outstanding facilities and share good practice across the whole curriculum. This enables us to provide our students with the skills and qualifications needed to progress into employment, further and higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions.
