Dear Parent/Guardian

As you aware we had an Ofsted Inspection on 4/5 March and there were five inspectors who were in school for two days. Under the new framework the team are in school for a very short time. The main focus is to test the schools view of its strengths and weaknesses. They observed around thirty lessons and feedback from staff indicated that 2/3 of lessons were good or better. They also spent time interviewing key staff and groups of students. They were extremely pleased with the welcome they received and commented on how proud our students were of their school. Thank you to the parents who returned the questionnaire – just under 200 parents did this in a very short time frame.

I am pleased to say there were no surprises and that the theme of the report is that of a school making rapid progress with good capacity to improve. We know we can raise achievement further and the current Year 11 and indeed other years are on track to meet or exceed targets.

We are not complacent and our main priority is to raise the bar on teaching and learning to raise achievement across the school.

Care, guidance and support, and personal development and well being was recognised as a real strength being judged to be good and outstanding across the school. The report also strongly endorses the schools self-evaluation and the priorities that we have set for the future.

I believe just as strongly now, as I did on my appointment, that Downend has the potential to be an outstanding school in the future. This Ofsted confirmed that we are on that journey and I know that staff, students, parents and governors are on board.
