Houses
Every student who attends Downend School is a member of a ‘house’. The houses are made up of students from year 7 through to the Post 16.
At the beginning of the academic year the new year 7s’ are assigned to one of the houses and meetings are held to elect House Captains. The House Captains are responsible for organising house teams for the wide variety of house activities that take place throughout the year.
The Houses exist to foster leadership and responsibility among more senior students and to encourage involvement, loyalty, co-operation and good discipline among all students. The House system encourages competition in four areas of school activity:
- Academic
- Sport
- The Arts
- Attendance
Students quickly form an allegiance to their house and a sense of fun and friendly competition pervades all the house events.
