Science

As a lead Faculty, together with Mathematics, Technology and English we aim to be at the forefront of developments in education. We have led the introduction of Applied GCSEs and were the first Faculty to set individual test targets for pupils. We take pride in the quality of feedback we give to pupils about their progress and feel that this is a major factor in our success. As a lead faculty we have done much to build links with other schools and education providers, with local industry and with the wider community.

Science


The Science Department at Downend School consists of a team of thirteen full time and four part time teachers. In addition we have five laboratory technicians and a number of teaching assistants all of whom are committed to working collaboratively to ensure the students reach their full potential. Although we are a large department we work as a very supportive, friendly and cohesive team.

All lessons take place in fully equipped laboratories (thirteen in total) and a dedicated ICT suite housed in a purpose built Science teaching block. All classrooms have integrated Promethean interactive whiteboard systems allowing for multimedia resources to be used. All laboratories have recently been refurbished.

Very detailed schemes of work are provided for each year group: these provide learning objectives for each lesson; detailed suggestions for starter, main and plenary activities; as well as the expected outcomes and assessment opportunities.
