Students at Downend School were all smiles this morning as they collected their GCSE and the new Diploma results. Students have reason to celebrate today (24 August) as GCSE results for the school show continued improvement. Governors and staff are “incredibly pleased with the school’s best ever performance at GCSE”.

The school has improved on last years results with 66% of students achieving 5 or more GCSE passes. Head teacher Tamryn Savage said: “Our students and their teachers are delighted with their performance and are now looking forward to extremely successful Post 16 Studies. We are delighted with the English and Maths results which shows an increase of 6% from last year.”

Mrs Savage attributes this outstanding success to the unique partnership which the school develops between staff, students and their parents.

She added: “Downend staff deserves strong congratulations for their contribution to this partnership. They go out of their way to help their students and are often to be seen running extra classes at the end of the day.”

Two of the top achievers from Downend are Emma Croot and Chris Perrot, both achieved 7 A* grades, Chris Perrot, who will be staying on at the schools sixth form, said: “I am really pleased and I feel like all of my hard work has finally paid off.”

Head of Year 11 Mr Brewster said: “All the children here are brilliant and they really deserve the results, they have all worked hard for five years and in particularly the last two years.”

In the first year of the new Diplomas two students have achieved the highest award and gained 16.5 grade C’s and above. One of the students, Parag Bhatt, was also awarded the National Diploma Student of the Year, has secured an apprenticeship with the MOD, and now has an exceptional set of results to add to his achievements. He said: “I am really overwhelmed with my results and I will be celebrating tonight.”

Mrs Savage concluded: “The level of application and determination also shown by students, as always, contributed to the many impressive individual and collective successes of this year group.”

Downend Students Achieve Top Results

Students at Downend arrived, full of anticipation, to receive their A level results; there were smiles all round as they opened their envelopes to reveal another successful year at Downend School. The percentage of passes has increased by 3.4 % from the previous year’s results with some outstanding achievements. All ten students who took their English Language and Literature ‘A’ level a year early passed with exceptional results. April Hartley, achieved an A* in her Mathematics A level – a tremendous achievement given that she, too, also took this a year early.

Two candidates, between them, scooped four of the new prestigious ‘A’ level A* grades: Daniel Salmon and Eleanor James both gained two A* grades and an A grade in their chosen subjects. Daniel Salmon has also been accepted at St John’s, Cambridge.

The new elite A* grade introduced for the first time this year is designed to pick out the brightest students, and Downend is proud to announce that students have achieved this in Art, Textiles, Mathematics, Physics and Psychology.
An increase in the number of passes at ‘AS’ level was also seen this year, rising by 6% from 2009, and that’s not even including the 29 students accelerated in Year 11 who have gained excellent results in English Language, Film Studies Mathematics, and Polish.

Tamryn Savage, Headteacher, said, ‘I am delighted with the results, it shows the school’s commitment to raising standards is enabling students to get to their university of choice and further their career; giving them the best opportunities for their future.’
