Aims

Affiliated to the Specialist Schools Trust, Downend School aims to provide every student with their own special pathway to success.

The ‘learning to learn’ programme fosters the collaborative skills students bring from their primary years and further develops their ability to ‘learn’ in a variety of ways, giving them the skills needed for problem solving, thinking, working independently and in teams.

We offer an exciting enrichment programme including Music, Drama, Sport, outdoor education and study support.

The Learning Resource Centre is open from early in the morning until after school with special sessions and homework support to ensure that students are able to get the most out of their educational experience. As a Technology College, the school has forged excellent links with the primary schools and regularly runs a range of social events. Strong links with local businesses not only mean that students are well prepared for the world of work, but also that the school is able to extend and develop its work with the local community.

The curriculum offers choice and diversity; there are over seventy courses on offer at our Post-16 Centre and we are proud to be one of the schools selected to pilot the new diplomas. Currently over 20% of students are engaged in our gifted and talented programme and participate in a range of activities.

It’s not just about the subjects, it is the diversity of the curriculum and the enrichment Downend School offers that makes us unique. Throughout the years students have the opportunity to be part of something else, something special that they want, from their own talent shows to trips as far away as Bolivia and Peru. It’s all possible and we can make it happen.
