GCSE Textiles

Introduction

This is a two year GCSE course, which as the name suggests focuses on textiles. It includes a range of design and make projects, using textiles to produce a variety of products, either items of fashion or interior design and furnishings.

What will you gain from this course
  • You will develop your design and making skills
  • You will become more confident and be able to produce complex textile items.
  • You will learn to use colour, shape and pattern creatively.
  • You will gain an insight into how clothing and furnishings are produced commercially.
  • You will develop a questioning mind which will enable you to solve problems creatively.
  • You will gain an insight into the world of fashion and how designers work, and what influences them.

Year 10

In Year 10 there are a number of projects, focusing on fashion and furnishings. These will develop your practical skills, and knowledge and understanding of the textile industry.

Year 11

The focus of Year 11 is coursework. A project that focuses on fashion. In this project you will design & make an outfit based on the fashions of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s or 80’s.

This project is 60% of your GCSE grade.

The final 40% of the grade is exam based.

What will be expected of you

So far you have read a lot about what you can expect if you choose this course, it is important that you know what is expected of you.

You will be required to:

  • work hard and produce the best work you are capable of
  • complete both written and practical work
  • complete homework regularly
  • work in a mature and safe manner

Assessment

As with all Design and Technology GCSEs your final grade is:

60% Coursework (folder and complete outfit)
40% Exam (a design based paper based on a theme)
