GCSE Electronic Products Practical Work

You will learn how to :
  • Terminate wires properly
  • Use strain relief & heat shrink to achieve reliable connections
  • Identify polarised components
  • Fit components to a pcb
  • Solder accurately
  • Handle Integrated circuit chips
  • Chemically etch printed circuit boards
  • Use a digital multimeter to measure voltage, resistance & current
  • Build products from plywood, aluminium, acrylic and polystyrene

In Year 10

  • You will make at least 3 products
  • An introductory product - usually a timer or flashing display
  • If time permits you will make an electronic Christmas decoration
  • A complex electroinic product, for example an electronic game or complex alarm system.

Electronic Products GCSE Assessment

Practical coursework 40%

An electronic product complete with case,
power supply & circuit which you have built
yourself to the highest quality standards.

Design Coursework 20%

A design folder of 12 to 15 A3 pages relating
to your practical product

Exam 40%

Technical subject knowledge, design ability, understanding of relevant social and environmental issues. The theory is hard.

A useful and interesting choice for:

Anyone with an inquiring mind and an interest in modern technology. Relevant to career paths of Engineering; plumbing; electricians; motor vehicle technicians, designers and engineers; environmental engineers, control technicians and engineers, communications technologists in fact anyone who comes into contact with modern digital systems and that is virtually everybody these days.
