Physical Education
Key Stage 3
All students are required to follow courses in Games.
In addition, students must be taught Athletics, Gymnastics, Outdoor Education and/or Dance. The Key Stage 3 curriculum at Downend offers plenty of opportunity for students to access a wide range of physical activities, over and above what is required by the National Curriculum.
The Physical Education programme in Key Stage 3 sets out to develop physical, moral and cognitive skills through a range of activities. The emphasis during the first three years at Downend School is placed firmly on the physical development of the
student, encouraging physical skills in a variety of forms.
An important component of the curriculum is the emphasis of the health and fitness education that the students receive, the attention to teamwork, leadership, idea of fair play and the spirit of competition.

Key Stage 4
During Key Stage 4, the pupils are given an opportunity to specialise in the areas we offer for a longer period of time.
In Year 11 we offer the pupils the opportunity to participate in our 'Off-site Curriculum'.
We have been fortunate enough to create a number of links with external facilities in
the local community and together we can offer an alternative curriculum opportunity.
Activities include: Ice skating, gym, judo, rock climbing, golf, aerobics and many more.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Downend Physical Education Faculty prides itself on offering the opportunity for all its pupils to participate in extra curricular activities.
We encourage all pupils to participate in activities outside of their PE lessons, whether at a competitive or purely recreational level.
Ask the PE Faculty for further details.
