ICT- Nationals

This is a two year course comprising two pieces of coursework. There are no examinations. It is a level 2 course. There is the possibility of choosing it as a double-award which comprises an additional two units.

Introduction

Nationals in ICT has been designed to provide knowledge of how ICT is used in Business and the workplace as well as how ICT is used in the new and more vibrant areas of media rich modern life, namely web design and animation.

Unit 1: ICT Skills for Business

This unit covers essential skills for the modern workplace, such as organisation and file management, downloading from the internet, sending and receiving emails, using spreadsheets, and database management.
Students will be able to show that they understand:

  • good working practices, including the organisation of files using appropriate file and directory/folder names and the regular backing up of files
  • features of email software
  • methods of searching for information on the internet
  • methods of integrating different types of files into a document or presentation
  • the appropriate software to use for different tasks
  • methods of storing, retrieving and analysing data.

Unit 2: Graphics

In this unit students will develop their knowledge of different types of computer graphics that can be used in webpages. They will be able to:

  • research, collect and describe a range of existing graphics/images for use in web pages plan the production of a range of graphic images for a client, to be used on their website
  • create a navigation bar or menu bar
  • create a set of navigation buttons
  • create an advertising banner
  • present work to a client for a specific purpose, using a suitable format for display.

The following two units are for those students who choose the double award route.

Unit 3: Webpage Creation

This unit enables students to develop knowledge relating to the planning and creation of a multimedia website. Students will develop the skills to plan, design and implement a simple website. They will develop an understanding of common concepts and features relating to the creation of webpages, webpage formatting and website structure.

They will be able to format the pages to create a house style, including creating hyperlinks, tables and forms. Students will also develop skills to include interactive elements, where appropriate.
They will be able to:

  • design a multimedia website
  • create a multimedia website
  • create hyperlinks
  • create interactive elements
  • create a user form for capturing user feedback
  • test a website and act on the findings
  • evaluate a website they have created.

Unit 4: Animation

By completing this unit students will develop a knowledge and understanding of how to design, produce and test a short animation which is fit for purpose. They will be able to:

  • review several existing animations
  • design an animation
  • create an animation
  • test the animation.

ICT- iMedia

This is a two year course comprising three pieces of coursework. There are no examinations. It is a level 2 course.

Introduction

iMedia has been designed to provide a route into, or further development of skills in, a wide range of job roles within the dynamic interactive media industry. OCR iMedia is appropriate to those having an interest in or preparing to work as: web designers, graphic artists, multimedia producers, animators, sound designers and storyboards.

Unit 1: Digital Graphics

This unit is designed to provide students with an understanding of the types and uses of digital graphics. A student will be able to:

  • Use a digital camera to obtain images and transfer these electronically;
  • Use the basic editing tools and features of a digital image manipulation programme (Fireworks or Serif DrawPlus);
  • Edit a digital graphic for a particular purpose.

Knowledge, skills and understanding

  • Understand there are different types of graphic and when   where they are used.
  • Know the component parts of a digital camera.
  • Aware of the different file formats (jpeg, gif, pdf etc.)
  • Able to use the properties and capabilities of image manipulation software.
  • Use the functions of the software to open, edit, retouch and repair a graphic. These include resolution, cropping, transforming, hue   saturation, cloning, blur and many others.
  • Planning methods, e.g. visualize, storyboard.
  • Working to a client brief and reviewing the edited image against the original brief.

Unit 2: Web Authoring

This unit is designed to provide students with an understanding of the capabilities of web authoring and the skills involved in building a website. A student will be able to use appropriate software to create, add content and publish a website. In particular students will:

  • Understand the requirements and capabilities of web authoring;
  • Understand the range of accessing web pages and connecting to the Internet;
  • Create a website structure;
  • Use the tools and features of a web authoring program to add content to a website;
  • Manage and upload a website.

Knowledge, skills and understanding

  • Define a website including ways of connecting to the Internet and ways of accessing webpages.
  • Purpose and benefits of a website.
  • Role of ISPs and how to use a web browser.
  • Examine, write and view HTML tags.
  • Creation of a basic webpage including using templates.
  • Use of site management tools to manage files.
  • Understand appropriate naming conventions (e.g. index.htm, home.htm)
  • Add content to a website including applying basic design principles.
  • Planning and reviewing a website to a specific brief.

Unit 3: Digital Animation

This unit is designed to provide students with an understanding of digital animation and skills in the creation of rich digital animation. Students will develop an understanding of what animation is and how it is produced. In particular students will:

  • Understand what digital animation is and identify where, when and why it is used;
  • Understand and use the tools and features of a digital animation program which allow the creation of animated sequences;
  • Create a digital animation sequence.

Knowledge, skills and understanding

  • Ability to create simple graphical animation including non-computer animation;
  • Use of animation features, e.g. frame by frame animation, tweened animation;
  • Using the tools and options panels, e.g. selection, line, lasso, transform, eyedropper etc.;
  • Use of symbols and the document library (graphics, button etc.);
  • Drawing;
  • Planning and reviewing an animation to a specific brief.
