Learning for Life
At Downend we believe that students who are engaged and inspired will become motivated and successful learners. For more detailed information on our curriculum and the value we attach to each subject please see here
Our teachers are subject specialists who engage students in learning through a wide variety of activities. Students are expected to be actively involved in their learning, developing vital skills such as independence, creativity and resilience.
The curriculum at Downend is broad and imaginative, including traditional subjects alongside practical applied courses. We recognise that young people have different interests and abilities, and provide appropriate support and challenge for each young person during their time at Downend.
Our Year 7 curriculum includes Challenge lessons where students can experience a wide variety of challenging new activities and develop personal learning and thinking skills, culminating in a residential camp in the summer term.
During Year 9 students choose their options for Year 10 and beyond from a number of “pathways”, each carefully designed to allow the right balance of challenge and support. Traditional academic pathways are complemented by vocational and work-related learning pathways.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
All students follow a core curriculum consisting of English, Mathematics, Science, Design Technology, PE and Personal Development Curriculum (including Citizenship and Religious Studies).
Post 16 (Years 12 and 13)
Our Post-16 curriculum offers choice and diversity, and was deemed by Ofsted to be ‘outstanding.’
A wide range of level 2 and level 3 courses is available – some of the courses are being offered jointly with Mangotsfield School during 2014/15. Full details are available in the Post-16 Prospectus.
All Post-16 students follow a core curriculum. This includes the Extended Project Qualification which can lead to an AQA Baccalaureate. There are also opportunities for students to take the European Computer Driving Licence and Open University modules.
