Community

Downend is an outward looking school. As part of our Specialist School programme we are focusing on and improving our engagement with our local community. As an outward looking school we are developing sustainable partnerships and networks that make a real difference to aspiration, achievement and lifelong learning. We have a constantly widening network in the community with parents, carers, local businesses, primary schools, secondary schools and community organisations.

Over the last six years we have established an extensive and varied programme of primary liaison using curriculum based and extra curricula activities. We are gradually widening our networks to every area of our curriculum. This strengthens our links with our partner primaries and bridges the gap between the primary and secondary phases of education.

Business in the Community

We have developed links with many local businesses. All students undertake work experience with many diverse businesses and organisations. The Post 16 and BTEC Engineering students work with local and national organisations – through visits and projects.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong Learning

As part of our wish to engage with the local community we run courses for adults during the evening. These enable us to use our facilities - particularly ICT – for Digital Camera introductory and advanced courses and an increasingly popular Family History course.
