Art, Music, Drama & Sport
Participation is a very important feature of life at Downend School.
All students follow courses in Art, Music and Drama in Years 7 to 9, with many students taking theses subjects as options in Years 10 to 13. There are many opportunities to participate both in the classroom and through a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities.
Our specialist Music facilities are home to a number of small and large ensemble groups, with singing a particular strength of the school, and there are regular opportunities to perform in concerts. The Drama studio stages numerous productions throughout the year, and in 2012 the two disciplines came together in a whole-school production of the musical “Bugsy Malone”.
Art is a very popular and successful option at GCSE and A-level and moved to new accommodation in 2012.
Sport is a long-standing strength of the school. The Downend Sports Centre is home to a diverse range of school and community sports and full use is made of our extensive indoor and outdoor facilities which include an all-weather pitch. In addition to weekly PE lessons and inter-house sports activities, there is a wide choice of training sessions and fixtures in which students can participate. Downend students have experienced considerable success in a variety of local, county and national championships.
Downend School has an emerging reputation for outdoor education, with a growing number of students achieving Duke of Edinburgh Awards and a biannual World Challenge expedition.
